The eleven-kilometre strait separating Ibiza and Formentera has no bridge, no causeway, no tunnel. Since Roman galleys carried salt from the island's inland pans, the only passage has been by sea.
Today, the crossing takes thirty minutes on a high-speed ferry or as long as you choose on a private vessel, where the route becomes a destination.
Formentera remains the smallest inhabited Balearic island, its population under twelve thousand. No airport exists. Every visitor arrives by water, and the ferry terminal at La Savina handles eighty per cent of that traffic. A private boat trip from Ibiza to Formentera bypasses the port queue entirely, delivering passengers directly to secluded coves along the northern and western coasts. Ses Illetes, routinely ranked among Europe's finest beaches, lies four kilometres north of La Savina; by chartered sailboat, you drop anchor fifty metres offshore. By ferry, you disembark at the terminal and queue for a taxi or bicycle.
The private charter market divides cleanly into crewed sailboats, motorboats, and vintage yachts. Sailboats dominate availability: traditional Balearic llaüts, fibreglass sloops from thirty to fifty feet, and restored wooden gaff-riggers dating to the 1930s. Crew size ranges from a solo skipper to a three-person team handling navigation, catering, and water-sports instruction. Most charters include snorkelling gear, paddleboards, and an open bar; several offer tapas prepared onboard. Departure points cluster around Ibiza Town's marina and the yacht harbour at Santa Eulària des Riu, with morning slots between nine and eleven securing the calmest sea state.
Formentera's underwater topography explains the route's appeal. Posidonia meadows blanket the seabed between the islands, a UNESCO-protected marine ecosystem that filters the water to near-distilled clarity. Visibility exceeds thirty metres on windless days. The anchorage off Espalmador, an uninhabited islet north of Formentera, sits above one of the densest posidonia fields in the Mediterranean. Charterers swim in water so transparent that depth perception fails; the sandy bottom appears within arm's reach but lies five metres down.
Weather governs the schedule. The Tramontana wind, blowing south from the Pyrenees, can churn the strait into two-metre swells with six hours' notice. Summer months from June through September offer the highest probability of flat seas, though autumn crossings benefit from thinner crowds and lower charter rates. Skippers monitor marine forecasts in real time and hold authority to delay or reroute any voyage.
